About Destination

Located in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, Tulum is a spectacular tourist destination in Quintana Roo. Tulum, which means “Wall” in Mayan tongue (in its highest period this pre-Columbian city was called “Zama”), is a collection integrated by the famous archeological zone, the hotels zone and the town: three places linked by geography, history and beauty that have turned Tulum into one of the most visited destination of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Strategically located, Tulum allows the visit to archeological zones, beaches and close ports. It is located 129 km from Cancun and only 61 km from Playa del Carmen, two of the most important tourist destinations of the entire region; at only 142 km from Chichen Itza, in the state of Yucatán, considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

To get to Tulum by land from the center of the country one can take the route Villahermosa-Champotón-Campeche. If you travel by plane, you can arrive at Cancun’s Airport and from there take the highway 307, arriving to Tulum in less than an hour.

The places to visit and the activities that one can practice always amaze the tourists from any part of the world. Among the most famous archeological zones around Tulum, we can mention Coba, Xcaret and Xel Ha, these last two names are also the name of eco tourist parks with an amazing amount of leisure options.

Some of the activities that stand out are: “Sea Trek”, which is walking in the bottom of the sea with a special helmet, which permits the person to breath. “Flight in Mo”, called that way in honor of a Mayan legend and consists in flying over a well of water with a liana. “Piedra del Valor” (Stone of Courage), which is a 5 meters stone from where one does diving into the well. “Trepachanga”, which consists in crossing from one side to the other the park, walking more than 50 meters over two ropes suspended on air over the water, and the therapeutic swimming with dolphins.

However, Tulum’s Archeological Zone is by itself the best excuse to visit this destination. Built between the years 1200 and 1450 by the enigmatic Mayans, these impressive building were abandoned in the late 16th century. “The Castle”, the main building, zealously guards the evidence of the ancient splendor of the only pre-Columbian city located right in front the sea. The landscape of the white sand, the emerald green water and the high palm trees give an impressive view of the Caribbean Sea.

It is worth mentioning the great tourist attraction that represent the Cenotes, water sinkholes of underground rivers that, together with submarine caves and caverns, giving a great opportunity for scuba diving and snorkeling. Some of the most famous cenotes are the Aktun Ha, Casa Cenote and Cristal. Plus, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and Akumal Beach represent other of the places preferred by travelers.

It is important that the traveler consider some things in his next trip: the usage of sun block and biodegradable repellent of insects. If you practice scuba diving or snorkeling please don’t touch the coral nor step on them as they die with this simple touch. If you camp it is recommendable not leave traces of the camping and remember that Tulum is a natural reserve that promotes the care and attention of the environment.

Spend an amazing vacation in Tulum. These days, to book a hotel room or cabin in this destination is easy and fast, thanks to the modern reservations system by Internet.
